Sergey Gaplikov proposed to introduce quotas for veneer logs export
The Head of the Republic of Komi offered to consider this issue at the IV International Conference "Pulp and Paper Industry of Russia. New Realities, New Opportunities". According to the head of the region, this restriction could be an effective measure to support domestic producers.
“In 2010-2017, the total plywood output of Russian companies grew 2.5 times. But since 2016 there has been a decline primarily caused by lack of raw materials due to their export abroad,” Sergey Gaplikov explained. ”For example, this year over a million cubic meters of veneer logs will be exported, and we should regard the shortage of raw materials for Russian companies. This volume is comparable to the annual demand of plywood companies of the republic.”
It is assumed that restrictions will make raw materials market more sustainable, stop veneer logs price growth, ensure utilization of domestic capacities and thereby improve the financial status of Russian plywood mills. This will create the conditions for their further development, modernization and expansion.
